Daisy Ridley says 'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' will address 'toxic' Reylo romance

The “toxic” potential romance between Rey and Kylo Ren — dubbed “Reylo” by fans — will be addressed in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, according to star Daisy Ridley.

Fans have speculated that the unique bond between hero and villain could yield romance and Ridley said she finds it “really fun” to read people’s fan theories and ideas about what will happen to the characters.

Previous movie The Last Jedi, released in 2017, featured a bizarre link forming between Rey and Ren (Adam Driver), which allowed them to communicate with each other by using the Force.

This connection has sparked feverish discussion online about just how close the relationship between the two characters could become in the new film.

“It does not bother me, people writing theories,” Ridley told EW. “It’s really fun hearing them.“

The 27-year-old actor added: “Plus, because I know what’s sort of going to happen, I think it’ll be really interesting to see people’s reaction to [the final film]. Obviously, there’s this whole Reylo thing and some people are very passionate about it, some aren’t.”

Ridley stated that director JJ Abrams “does deal with” the complexities and ambiguities of the relationship between the two characters in The Rise of Skywalker.

Abrams is returning to the franchise after helming 2015 comeback The Force Awakens, replacing original Episode IX director Colin Trevorrow.

Ridley said: “It’s a very complex issue. People talk about toxic relationships and whatever it is.

“It’s no joke and I think it’s dealt with really well because it’s not skimmed over.”

The Rise of Skywalker will mark the conclusion of the Skywalker Saga, which has driven the Star Wars universe since A New Hope first arrived in cinemas in 1977.

Ridley and Ren will join fellow returning cast members John Boyega and Oscar Isaac, with original trilogy cast members Mark Hamill, Billy Dee Williams and Carrie Fisher set to appear.

Fisher’s appearance will be through the medium of unused footage from earlier movies, shot prior to her passing in 2016.

Despite the current saga coming to an end, Star Wars fans will not be starved of visits to the galaxy far, far away with The Mandalorian one of the key pillars of new streaming service Disney+ and The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson developing a mysterious new trilogy of films.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on 19 December.
