The Marsh King’s Daughter, the new film starring Daisy Ridley and Ben Mendelsohn, has landed a low score on Rotten Tomatoes following its first reviews.

The psychological thriller, which is based on Karen Dionne’s 2017 novel, follows Helena (Ridley), who is forced to confront her past after her father, the infamous Marsh King (Mendelsohn), escapes from prison.

With the Marsh King now on the run, Helena vows to keep her family from suffering the same fate she did, which involved years of captivity at the hands of her father.

You can read a selection of reviews below:

IndieWire

"The movie is so afraid of making viewers restless that it shies away from dramatising anything it can’t resolve in 20 seconds or less."

The Hollywood Reporter

"The novel presumably filled in the blanks to build an engrossing tale, one that here comes across as a rote suspenser, complete with jump scares and a violent climax."

Slant Magazine

"By the time we get to the conclusion, there’s no ambiguity left to Helena’s tale, and so we’re left waiting for her to catch up with us."

Punch Drunk Critics

"Fans of Ridley will want to check this out for her, because there’s not much suspense to be found elsewhere."

Screen Rant

"With strong performances, the dawdling pace prevents the narrative from fully being realised, but it manages to maintain interest until the very end."

Next Best Picture

"Neil Burger’s newest film isn’t revolutionary in its storytelling, nor does it keep us guessing how it’ll end. Still, it features a twisty and unexpected intro and solid performances from talented cast members."

The Marsh King's Daughter is in US cinemas now; there is currently no UK release date.
