Tottenham Hotspur have decided against a late January transfer that Antonio Conte would seemingly have approved of, according to a report.

So far this month, Tottenham have brought in Arnaut Danjuma on loan from Villarreal. However, their other activity has been minimal. Still, a busy conclusion to the transfer window awaits them.

Tottenham had been hoping to sign Sporting CP wing-back Pedro Porro, but that deal appears to be off. Instead, a likelier deal before the deadline could be a departure.

Indeed, Sevilla have been in advanced talks with Bryan Gil over a loan return to La Liga. But he is not the only fringe player whose future has come into question this month.

Tottenham have also been expecting to receive interest in Japhet Tanganga. The academy graduate has not had too many opportunities to play in defence for them this season.

Indeed, he has only appeared in one Premier League match so far in 2022-23. Therefore, it might be time for him to consider a future elsewhere.

According to the Daily Express, a heated battle for Tanganga’s services has been materialising. It is claimed that eight clubs are keen to take him elsewhere, although none are specifically identified.

However, Tottenham are ready to block his potential departure, even though Conte has little use for him.

Per the report, Conte would ask for Tottenham to sign a replacement if Tanganga left. The Italian tactician still wants to be able to call upon six centre-backs for the rest of the campaign.

But Daniel Levy believes it would be more costly to bring someone new in. Since he is “determined to avoid unnecessary spending”, he is unlikely to sanction such a change of personnel.

Besides, Tanganga is a homegrown player, contributing to a quota that Tottenham have been struggling to balance. His departure could narrow down the type of player they would be able to bring in.

Tanganga stuck at Tottenham

Therefore, any of the eight clubs interested in Tanganga could be disappointed for the time being. His contract with Spurs is due to last until 2025.

Tanganga has amassed 47 appearances for the Tottenham first team over the course of his career. But as his 24th birthday approaches in February, it might be time for him to find somewhere else to fulfil his potential.

Hence, Tottenham’s stance could be frustrating. Does Conte really need a replacement for someone he has only used four times this season? Or is it Levy’s fault for not backing the head coach with his evolution of the squad?

The latter sounds more like an argument Conte may make if the time comes for him to leave Tottenham himself. The best solution, in all honesty, would be for them to allow Tanganga to leave.

But it appears that the Londoner will have to wait until next season at the earliest to find a new club to represent. If his current situation is anything to go by, he won’t have a shortage of suitors.
