Danny DeVito has provided a disappointing update for a potential sequel to Twins.

The 1988 buddy-comedy saw DeVito and Arnold Schwarzenegger play twin brothers who were separated at birth, with the bulk of the action depicting their contrasting personalities.

A potential sequel has been mooted ever since the film’s release, with Triplets being in development as recently as 2021, but DeVito has seemingly revealed that the project is now on the backburner.

“Arnold [Schwarzenegger] and I want to work together. We missed Twins 2, because he became governor – which, he should have done Twins 2 instead of becoming governor,” he told GQ.

“Now we have a little thing going, a little project that we've been chatting about. It's [about] two friends, two guys, because we have a good time together. We complement each other in a lot of ways. I am way stronger than he is.”

The news comes months after Schwarzenegger also said the project was inactive, with the star revealing to Entertainment Weekly that the death of director Ivan Reitman effectively ended any interest in a sequel.

“Jason Reitman literally stopped the project when his father died. His father wanted to do it really badly. I wanted to do it really badly. Danny DeVito wanted to do it really badly. We had the financing. When his father passed away, Jason says, 'I never liked the idea' and put a hold on it."

Triplets was set to see DeVito and Schwarzenegger reprise their roles alongside Tracy Morgan, who was cast as an unlikely brother to the pair. Reitman, who passed away in 2022, said the project had been rewritten for Morgan.

It’s not the first project that DeVito has revisited in recent months, with the star set to reunite with Mara Wilson for a special live performance of Matilda.
