Daredevil 'Is Not A Man Without Fear' In Netflix Series

More details about Marvel’s Netflix series Daredevil have been revealed including more details about the show’s style, Daredevil’s development as a hero and whether or not we’ll be seeing his nemesis Bullseye.

Entertainment Weekly spoke to Marvel’s TV head Jeph Loeb, showrunner Steven DeKnight and star Charlie Cox about the new series.

We’ve already been told that this series will be closer to a crime drama than a superhero movie, and that makes perfect sense given the “street-level” status of Daredevil as a hero and his alter ego Matt Murdock’s occupation as a lawyer.

What EW has learned however is that while the series will take influence from Frank Miller’s Daredevil: The Man Without Fear (chiefly the character’s first costume) the character won’t be without fear, “Someone who does not have fear is not that interesting,” says Cox.

“The way I like to think about it is that he is a man with fear, but he on a daily basis decides to confront that fear and to overcome it. So the title of ‘the man without fear’ is almost a title that the public in his world gives him just because of what he does. But inside himself, he’s very afraid at times. And he finds a way to confront those fears and punch through it.”

EW were also told that the new series will be every bit about its villain – Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin (Vincent D’Onofrio) – as it is about its hero. “Fisk has very many different aspects so it’s not all, ‘I want to conquer the city and make a lot of money,’” explains Loeb.

“In our story, we tell the story of how he met his wife Vanessa and how they fell in love — our antagonist actually has a love story. That’s the love story you’re following, the one you’re invested in, and seeing how that affects him and changes him. I think Vincent just brings such depth to it, his performance is just astounding.”

A supervillain is a very interesting avenue to pursue and should help set Daredevil aside from Iron Mans and Thors of the world it is set in.

Kingpin is the primary villain and one that fits in with the Netflix series, and its follow-ups about Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, all of which set in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil’s best known enemy however is Bullseye, and we may well see him pop, just not right away.

“I wouldn’t say there’s no plans to include the character in the series. It’s not to say he wouldn’t be in the series at some point. But I think if you try to jam in too many characters, it just becomes a mess,” says DeKnight.

“[Bullseye’s] story was told in the last iteration of Daredevil that anybody saw [the Ben Affleck film]. My feeling was, ‘Why repeat it?’ And honestly, if you’re looking for a juicy, multi-faceted crime drama, Wilson Fisk was the obvious choice to play the antagonist. Bullseye is a little more cut and dry. Not to say you couldn’t make him fantastic over 13 hours, but Fisk really felt like the right yin to the yang for Matt, and for what we wanted to do this season.”

Daredevil is believed to be launching on Netflix in May.
