When Dave Berry took over the breakfast show on XFM in 2010, it was a great career move, but he almost mucked up within the first week.

Appearing on White Wine Question Time, Dave revealed to podcast host Kate Thornton that his most memorable career moment was one he’d actually forgotten: turning up for work on day four of the new gig.

The issue started when, in order to impress his new bosses, Dave booked an interview with Liam Gallagher.

“Liam came in on the Wednesday morning at like 10, and we pre-record his interview with him and it went really well,” explained Dave.

“I went for a beer with him: I'm a massive Oasis fan, so it was kind of like a great thing for me to do. Then my friend called me, and he was like, ‘Oh are you out and about?’”

What started with one beer with Liam descended into a whole day of drinking, and Dave awoke to find the sun streaming through the window.

“I'm kind of coming to and I'm blinking a lot and I'm thinking it's really bright for five o'clock in the morning, which is when I normally get collected. And four days into this brand-new breakfast show I've overslept and missed it.”

In a blind panic, Dave did what any new employee does – called to apologise.

“I call my producer and I'm like, ‘Oh my God, I am so, so sorry. I'm so, so sorry.’ And he says, ‘What are you sorry for?’ I said, ‘I can't believe I've missed the show – this is so unprofessional’.

“And he said to me… ‘Uh, you did the show’.”

Dave says he thinks the only reason he managed to present the show while under the influence – and not remember a thing – was because they had pre-recorded the interview with Liam Gallagher.

“We were playing that out and apparently I was perfectly capable of going 'This is what happened when I caught up with Liam'. And that was all I had to do, which is low-hanging fruit for any broadcaster.

“Apparently I got a taxi home, went to bed and I woke up about one o'clock in the afternoon. And I was so befuddled by my state, I called in and apologised for not doing the show.”

When Kate told Dave he had been “properly Liamed”, Dave replied he only had himself to blame for the incident.

“I only went for one beer with Liam,” he laughed. “I can't blame him. It's me: I'm the problem!”

Dave presented the XFM breakfast show until 2018 when he joined Absolute Radio to present their breakfast show.
