‘Deadpool 2’ Not Expected to Recast T.J. Miller Following Sexual Abuse Allegations

Deadpool 2” won’t be following in the footsteps of “All the Money in the World” and removing an actor accused of sexual misconduct. Lauren Shuler Donner, who has produced all the “X-Men” movies to date, has told Rotten Tomatoes that the Ryan Reynolds-starring superhero film is currently in its final editing stage and will probably not be removing T.J. Miller from the picture. The actor and comedian plays Wade Wilson’s foul-mouthed best friend and bar owner Weasel in the superhero franchise.

“We’re in the final editing,” Donner said when asked about Miller’s involvement. “I don’t think so.”

Miller was accused of sexual abuse by an anonymous woman who gave an interview to The Daily Beast that was published December 19. The woman described being the victim of assault and physical violence at the hands of Miller when they both attended George Washington University. One evening when she went back to Miller’s apartment after having a few drinks, she was “punched in the mouth during sex.” During another altercation, the woman says Miller choked her to the point where she was audibly gasping and then raped her.

Miller denied the accusations, telling The Daily Beast that the woman was “using the current climate” of the #MeToo movement “to bandwagon and launch these false accusations.” Miller’s “Deadpool” co-star Ryan Reynolds and director David Leitch never weighed in on the issue, and now it appears Miller will remain in the sequel.

Donner told Rotten Tomatoes that Miller’s future in the franchise is a bit more unclear but that the decision is a “studio thing” and she’s not sure of the answer. “Deadpool” has not officially been greenlit for a third installment, though it’s a no-brainer given what a colossal success the original one was.

Fans have been wondering what Miller’s fate would be for “Deadpool 2” in the wake of the allegations against him. Ridley Scott managed to remove Kevin Spacey from his drama “All The Money in the World” and reshoot all of his scenes with Christopher Plummer in just over a week to save the film from being released with an accused abuser in a supporting role. In a similar switch, Ed Westwick will be removed from BBC’s already-shot “Ordeal By Innocence” and be replaced by Christian Cooke.

“Deadpool 2” opens in theaters nationwide June 1.
