‘Deadpool 2’ writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick have divulged some new details about the upcoming superhero sequel, discussing the process of writing the sequel and major new character Cable.

Speaking to Collider, Reese and Wernick talked about the importance of honing the character once and actor has been cast while also remaining faithful to who the time-travelling member of the X-Men is in the comics.

Cable is a character fans have wanted to see on the big screen for years, and the writers are aware of that pressure. No actor has yet been cast in the role however. Collider asked how that has affected the writing process.

“It’s intimidating because we have to find his voice but we don’t have an actor yet so we don’t know who we’re writing for,” said Reese. “There’s so many diverse people that have been brought up as possibilities for Cable and who have not been brought up but we’re considering. And, much like with Ryan, that decision will greatly impact his cadences and rhythms.

“We’ll make him like he is in the comics and make him faithful, but I do think that voice will inform us.”

“I think authenticity is so important,” added Wernick. “I think it’s part of what made ‘Deadpool’ such a success, I think we’re going to continue that authenticity in the second one.”

Reese agreed, adding: “With Cable, he’s got such a convoluted past and such a convoluted origin story that I think we’re going to try and… distill him down to his essence. It will be authentic and faithful, but it’s not going to include the 18,000 details.”

In the same interview the writers confirmed the returns of Negasonic Teenage Warhead (Brianna Hildebrand) and Colossus (Stefan Kapicic).

It’s been roughly a year since ‘Deadpool’ shocked Hollywood and became, in many more ways than just box office totals, the biggest superhero movie of 2016.

Ryan Reynold’s passion project was a bona fide phenomenon that enjoyed the biggest ever opening weekend for an R-rated film at the US box office, and became the highest grossing R-rated movie of all time.

Details regarding that sequel have been thin on the ground, but it’s also known that another fan-favourite character, Domino, will also appear. ‘Deadpool 2’ is currently scheduled for release in 2018 and is expected to start shooting in Spring.
