Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy has revealed that audiences don’t need to do any Marvel "homework" to enjoy the new film.

The upcoming movie, which will be released in July, will bring together Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool and Hugh Jackman, who will make his debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Wolverine.

The third Deadpool film will be another addition to an ever-expanding MCU, however in a new interview with Associated Press, director Levy revealed that he wants to make the movie as accessible as possible.

"I was a good student in school," he said. "I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies."

"I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that. This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research."

Levy has been friends with both Reynolds and Jackman for over a decade, having directed both Free Guy and Real Steel, and he explained that this off-screen relationship helped when making the film.

He said: "The real benefit of being friends off set is that you can try crazy stuff without fear of falling. Because some of it won’t work, and that will be momentarily embarrassing, but if you’re among friends, it’s okay to make a fool of yourself in the pursuit of something surprising and something unexpected.

"This movie is filled with moments, but comedic and character-based, that we didn’t expect and were the result of a freedom that came from being friends."

This week, the latest trailer for Deadpool & Wolverine was released, and the new clip teased a return for X-Men characters Lady Deathstrike and Azazel.

The clip also confirmed that The Crown’s Emma Corrin will be playing X-Men supervillain Cassandra Nova in the new film, with fans getting a first look at the character.

Deadpool & Wolverine is released in UK cinemas on July 25 and in US cinemas on July 26.
