Deadpool Storms Box Office To Record-Breaking Weekend

‘Deadpool’, the latest superhero offering from Fox, is predicted to do much better than anticipated in its opening weekend with a record-breaking $100 million haul.

The foul-mouthed anti-hero, played by Ryan Reynolds, is set to soar well over the $100 million mark during the four-day Valentine’s weekend/Presidents Day holiday, smashing the previous record for an R-rated movie set by ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’.

That record, set in 2014, stands at $93 million for the extended weekend but perhaps the most impressive aspect about ‘Deadpool’s’ success is that it’s on its way to surpassing the figure and isn’t even a Valentine’s themed film.

No doubt its marketing campaign has captured the imagination (and laughter) of the public and has gone down a storm with audiences. It did, at one point, advertise itself as a romance film, but in a very self-aware, tonguie-in-cheek way. Maybe some have taken that at face value?

With its opening Friday take of $35 million, including $12.7 million from Thursday night in the US, it’s the owner of a new record set for an R-rated movie. It’s also likely to be the biggest Presidents Day weekend opening in history, which is some going for the niche hero flick.

According to reports, it’ll end Monday on a whopping $130 million, which is far more than anyone ever predicted.

In fact, ‘Deadpool’ seems to have surpassed all expectations, including a forecast of $70 million, and Fox’s anticipation of £60-65 million.

Reynolds’ wise-cracking merc is something of a refreshing change from the family-friendly nature of ‘X-Men’ or ‘The Avengers’, swaying more towards the ‘Kick Ass’ brand of the adult comic world.

Currently, the explicit action movie’s been well received by critics, with an 84% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, so expect it do continue to perform well over the coming weeks.

‘Deadpool’ is in UK cinemas now.
