Deadpool & Wolverine has made history for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with the upcoming film receiving the highest age rating for the franchise.

The superhero film, the third in the Deadpool series, sees the two heroes (played by Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman respectively) team up as they seek to quell the threat of the villainous Cassandra Nova (Emma Corrin).

Ahead of the release next month (July 26), the film has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association (via CBR), with the classification stating that the film has received the rating for “strong bloody violence and language throughout, gore and sexual references.”

Though both Deadpool and Deadpool 2 received an R rating, they were not part of the MCU, meaning that Deadpool & Wolverine is officially the first film in the series to be given a rating above PG-13.

Whilst fans still have a little while longer to wait, director Shawn Levy has given fans plenty to chew on by previewing certain aspects, with one interview seeing the filmmaker share that audiences don’t necessarily have to be experts on the MCU to watch it.

“I was a good student in school,” he said. “I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies.

“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world. But I didn’t want to presume that.

“This movie is built for entertainment, with no obligation to come prepared with prior research. This movie is filled with moments, but comedic and character-based, that we didn’t expect and were the result of a freedom that came from being friends.”

Deadpool & Wolverine is scheduled to be released in cinemas on July 26.
