Deadpool has earned a reputation for his R-rated humour, but it seems that even the Merc with a Mouth had to "clean" one of the jokes in Deadpool & Wolverine.

Speaking about the third entry in the Ryan Reynolds' foul-mouther anti-hero saga, writer-director Shawn Levy explained that he and the Wade Wilson star were asked to remove one line.

"There was only one line in the entire movie that we were asked to change," he told Entertainment Weekly.

"We have made a pact, Ryan and I, to go to our grave with that line, but I will say that it was replaced with an equally dirty line of dialogue about Pinocchio shoving his face up Deadpool's ass and starting to lie like crazy."

We can only guess how much more inappropriate the original joke must've been if Marvel went with that one instead.

Levy continued: "I was like, 'Ryan, that's your replacement line in response to, 'Can we clean it up?' That's Ryan Reynolds for you, audacious to the very edge."

Speaking about the future of his character, Reynolds recently admitted he doesn't know whether he'll ever return as Deadpool.

"This movie was made as a complete experience," he told Collider. "It wasn't meant to be a commercial for another movie. It wasn't meant to be any of that stuff. And, I think I get a great deal of joy making a movie like that.

"But honestly, right in this moment, I have no idea if I'll ever wear that Deadpool suit again — I hope I do — but I don't know. Right now's the time to just kind of hang it up for a bit and see what happens next."

Deadpool & Wolverine is now playing in cinemas.
