Death Stranding movie gets an exciting updateKojima Productions

Update: The movie adaptation of Death Stranding has received an exciting update, with the announcement that Kojima Productions is teaming up with A24.

The project was reported to be in development last year, but today's news has confirmed that Hideo Kojima will be working with production company A24, which has worked on acclaimed films including Everything Everywhere All at Once, Talk to Me, and The Whale.

“A24 was born into this world about 10 years ago. Their presence is singular within the industry, they are like no other," Kojima said.

"The films they are delivering to the world are high in quality and very innovative. I have been attracted to their creations and they have even inspired my own work. Their innovative approach to storytelling aligns with what Kojima Productions has been doing for the last 8 years.

"Now, we are making a Death Stranding movie together. There are a lot of 'game adaptation films' out there, but what we are creating is not just a direct translation of the game. The intention is that our audience will not only be fans of the games, but our film will be for anyone who loves cinema.

"We are creating a Death Stranding universe that has never been seen before, achievable only through the medium of film – it will be born."

Original story (December 17, 2022):

Death Stranding, the video game starring The Walking Dead's Norman Reedus carrying babies in jars across post-apocalyptic wastelands, is getting a movie.

Deadline reports that the film adaptation is coming from Hammerstone Studios, the indie producers behind the recent acclaimed horror Barbarian. The game's legendary creator and director Hideo Kojima is going to be heavily involved too.

The film is being fast-tracked into development, and although specific details are under wraps, it is said it will expand the universe with new concepts and characters.

Does that mean it will be canon to the game and its recently announced sequel? Will Lea Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen and, err, Conan O'Brien reprise their roles? We're very intrigued to see how this one plays out.

"I couldn’t be more excited about this new partnership with Hammerstone Studios," Kojima said in a statement. "This is a pivotal moment for the franchise and I’m really looking forward to collaborating with them in bringing Death Stranding to the big screen."

Hammerstone's Alex Lebovici added: "We are thrilled and honored to have the opportunity to partner with brilliant and iconic Hideo Kojima on his first film adaptation.

"Unlike other big budget tentpole video game adaptations, this will be something far more intimate and grounded. Our goal is to redefine what a video game adaptation could be when you have creative and artistic freedom. This film will be an authentic 'Hideo Kojima' production."

Kojima's best-known work, Metal Gear Solid, has been tipped for a big screen adaptation pretty much since it was released in 1998, with a film being officially announced in 2006.

There have been numerous stops and starts since then, but even with Oscar Isaac's casting as Solid Snake two years ago, the project hasn't really gotten off the ground. Let's hope this project moves a little faster.

Death Stranding 2 has been announced for PlayStation. The first is available on PS5, PS4 and PC.
