The Deliverance director responds to viral Glenn Close moment
The Deliverance spoilers follow.
The Deliverance director Lee Daniels has responded to a viral moment featuring star Glenn Close, sharing that he couldn’t resist including it in the final cut.
The supernatural horror film, which was released on Netflix on Friday (August 30), follows Ebony Jackson (Andra Day) as she attempts to raise her three children – played by Caleb McLaughlin, Demi Singleton and Anthony B Jenkins – on her own.

Eager to leave her personal demons behind by moving house, the family must confront literal evils in their new surroundings, with Child Protection Services being alerted to the strange happenings at the house.
Close, who is well-known for films including Fatal Attraction and The Wife, plays the part of Ebony’s mother Alberta, with the character – who is suffering from cancer – joining the family at home. Despite being known for her prestige roles, this latest part is altogether different for the eight-time Academy Award nominee.
In one scene, a bed-ridden Alberta is possessed by a devil, saying to her daughter: “I can smell your nappy pussy”. The line has gone viral online, with one viewer remarking on X/Twitter: “Lee Daniel’s you will pay for your Crimes for having Glenn Close say this #TheDeliverance”

Daniels, who has previously directed Precious, The Paperboy and The Butler, responded to the post, writing: “Had to do it” with a laughing emoji. He later provided context to the scene, revealing that he fought to keep the line in the final cut.
“I know what my audience wants. Certain people wanted me to take this part out of the film, but I knew it had to stay,” he wrote in response to a fan, who had remarked that Daniels was a “fearless” director.
The Deliverance is streaming on Netflix now.
