Yahoo Movies Demi Moore explains importance of full-frontal nudity in new movie
Demi Moore has explained the importance of full-frontal nudity in her latest film, The Substance.
The body horror film sees Moore play Elisabeth Sparkle, a fading celebrity who uses a black market drug which creates a younger and better version of herself named Sue (Margaret Qualley).
The film, which was written and directed by Coralie Fargeat, features several nude scenes as the two characters make sense of their new bodies, with Moore explaining why it was necessary during a press conference at the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

“Going into it, it was really spelled out - the level of vulnerability and rawness that was really required to tell the story,” said Moore (via Variety). “It was a very vulnerable experience and just required a lot of sensitivity and a lot of conversation about what we were trying to accomplish.
“I had someone [Qualley] who was a great partner who I felt very safe with. We obviously were quite close - naked - and we also got a lot of levity in those moments at how absurd those certain situations were. But ultimately. it’s just about really directing your communication and mutual trust.”
Fargeat, who won the Best Screenplay award at the festival for her work, had previously spoken about the feature’s prominent feminist message, stating that the genre of body horror lends itself to the film’s core themes.

“Body horror is the perfect vehicle to express the violence all these women’s issues are about,” said Fargeat, before discussing the rising #MeToo movement in France. “There is still a lot of work to do and it is progressing very slowly, but it’s time that someone has the courage to speak.
“It’s a little stone in the huge wall we still have to build regarding this issue, and to be honest, I hope my film will also be one of the stones of that wall. That’s really what I intended to do with it. To me, I still feel like we need a bigger revolution regarding all this and we are clearly not there yet.”
The Substance is scheduled to be released in the US on September 20; there is no UK release date.
