Denis Villeneuve: Blade Runner 2 ‘Is Terrorising Me’

Denis Villeneuve, the man tasked with overseeing a follow-up to Sir Ridley Scott’s iconic ‘Blade Runner’, has admitted that working on the film is “terrorising” him.

Villeneuve made this admission to The Hollywood Reporter while at the Venice Film Festival, where his latest film ‘Arrival’ premiered to widespread critical acclaim.

As you’d expect, the conversation soon turned to ‘Blade Runner 2′, which is due out in October, 2017, and has just begun production.

When asked about the pressures of matching the original, Villeneuve adamantly admitted, “First of all, it’s not possible to live up to the original. It’s Ridley Scott. It’s one of the best sci-fi films, one of the best films in the past 50 years.”

After making these remarks Villeneuve candidly then discussed how just the thought of trying to match ‘Blade Runner’ makes him shudder in horror.

“For me, what terrorises me right now is what I’m doing is taking ‘Blade Runner’ and making it my own, and that is horrific. To realise that when I look at the dailies, it’s not Ridley Scott, it’s me, and that it’s different.”

“It’s still the same universe, we are still in the same dream, but it’s mine, so it’s like I have no idea how you people will react. I don’t know. It has its own life.”

Villeneuve revealed that he’s currently working 18 hour days on the film, seven days a week, while ‘Blade Runner 2′ has even seeped into his dreams.

But despite all of this pressure and work he was adamant that this all pales into comparison with the excitement he has actually working on the hugely anticipated sci-fi thriller.

We’ll get to see what he can muster with ’Blade Runner 2′, which stars Ryan Gosling and a returning Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, when it’s finally released on October 5, 2017.
