Denzel Washington and Viola Davis star in trailer for Oscar-tipped drama Fences

Denzel Washington and Viola Davis appear to have their eyes on awards season in the first trailer for stage adaptation ‘Fences’.

The dramatic teaser depicts the Oscar winner and Oscar nominee in fine form as we hear Washington’s Troy give his son a stern talking to.

A succession of shots from throughout the film culminates with an outburst from Davis’ Rose that leaves Troy speechless.

'Fences’ is an adaption of August Wilson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play, about a retired baseball player unhappy with the direction of his life in 1950s Pittsburg.

Washington and Davis previously played the same roles on stage when the famed play was revived in 2010. They each won Tony awards for their portrayal of a struggling couple.

If that doesn’t say Oscar-potential, then what does?

Washington directs his third film following 'Antwone Fisher’ and 'The Great Debaters’ and has a good chance to picking up seventh Oscar nomination. He’s previously won twice, for 'Training Day’ in 2002 and 'Glory’ in 1990.

Viola Davis has been nominated twice before, for 'The Help’ and 'Doubt’.

'Fences’ also stars Mykelti Williamson, Russell Hornsby and Jovan Adepo. The film is set for release on Christmas Day in the US with a likely UK release in January or February.
