Depp: Transcendence is a foretelling of what’s to come

Actor claims new film has real-life potential.

Johnny Depp’s new movie ‘Transcendence’ sees his character cheat death by uploading his consciousness into a machine.

But while most of us might consider the premise to be sci-fi hokum, albeit that of the enjoyable variety, the actor himself thinks there’s real-life potential in the plot.

“When you look at it, it's kind of a sci-fi thing,” Depp told MTV News. “But when you dig a little bit deeper, the technology that we use in the film and the technology is very close to being a reality.”

“Transcendence is a foretelling of what's to come,” he added. “Not necessarily the outcome of the film, but we have the technology to upload human consciousness and they're just fine-tuning.”

Christopher Nolan's cinematographer Wally Pfister makes his directorial debut with the film, which stars Depp as controversial artificial intelligence scientist Dr. Will Caster, who battles a group of anti-tech radicals from inside the system - literally.

Early reviews of the movie haven’t been positive, with critics claiming ‘Transcendence’ is “dull” and “cliched”. It currently has a 19% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

‘Transcendence’ hits UK cinemas on 25 April.
