According to Deadline, the upcoming Pokémon movie by Legendary will be helmed by Rob Letterman – the director behind ‘Goosebumps’ and ‘Monsters Vs. Aliens’.

“Legendary Entertainment has set Rob Letterman to direct Detective Pikachu, the live-action film,” they revealed. “Scripted by Nicole Perlman and Alex Hirsch, the project follows Detective Pikachu, a new character and storyline in the Pokémon universe.”

So what on earth is ‘Detective Pikachu’?

Based on the main Pokemon series, ‘Great Detective Pikachu’ is an adventure video game developed by Creatures and released by Nintendo for the Nintendo 3DS. Players are tasked with working alongside an incredibly intelligent, talking Pikachu who claims to be a great detective… and have to solve various mysteries involving pokémon.

Why is this being made into a movie?

Well, it probably has a lot to do with Pokémon Go.

“Legendary made the movie deal in July at the height of the Pokemon Go craze, in which followers accumulated pocket monsters through their phones by passing by locations,” they explain… and it’s likely that Legendary sought to jump on the Pokémon hype.

But will there really be a market for it?

It’s certainly one of the more obscure Pokémon properties… and it seems like an odd move for a Hollywood studio to pick up such an odd spin-off. That said, there’s been a steady rise in pokémon popularity with the release of Pokémon Go, and more recently, Pokémon Sun and Moon.

“Universal Pictures, Legendary’s distribution partner, will release the live-action film outside Japan. The Pokémon Company’s longtime movie collaborator, Toho, will handle distribution of the film franchise in Japan, as it had done in its partnership with Legendary on its iconic monster reboot for Godzilla.”

But will it be a success?

For now, we’ll have to wait and see.
