Directors’ Fortnight Includes Takashi Miike, Jeremy Saulnier, ‘Dope’ – Cannes

UPDATE, WRITETHRU: The Directors’ Fortnight sidebar of the Cannes Film Festival has unveiled its full lineup for the 47th edition which runs from May 14-24. From 1,623 features submitted, the selection committee chose 17 titles that form a mix of returning directors and new voices, including a couple of Sundance entries. Among the additions announced today are Blue Ruin helmer Jeremy Saulnier’s thriller Green Room; Nabil Ayouch’s Much Loved, a portrait of three prostitutes in Marrakech; Jaco Van Dormael’s The Brand New Testament, a comedy about a Brussels-dwelling God; A Perfect Day with Olga Kurylenko and Benicio Del Toro; and a special screening of Japanese master Takashi Miike’s action vampire pic Yakuza Apocalypse: The Great War Of The Underworld. (See below for full list.)

Saulnier is making a return trip to the section after winning the FIPRESCI prize in 2013 with Blue Ruin. Green Room sees a punk rock band stuck in a remote venue after a murder. Imogen Poots, Alia Shawkat, Anton Yelchin and Patrick Stewart star with West End on sales. Van Dormael won the Camera d’Or in 1991 for Toto Le Héros and with surreal comedy New Testament sets Benoît Poelvoorde as a real-life, and odious, God who lives in Brussels. When his daughter hacks his computer, the world learns the date of the apocalypse. Jean Labadie’s Le Pacte is selling.

Two Sundance titles are in the mix: Rick Famuyiwa’s Dope which won the editing prize and is being released by Open Road Stateside; and Chloé Zhao’s Indian reservation-set Songs My Brother Taught Me. Both films are produced by Forest Whitaker’s Significant Productions.

Thomas Bidegan’s Les Cowboys, about a man searching for his daughter, stars François Damiens and John C. Reilly who, along with Benicio Del Toro, will be one of the most ubiquitous actors on the Croisette (each has three films). This is Bidegan’s first feature as helmer — he’s a longtime collaborator of Jacques Audiard’s and wrote that director’s Competition entry, Dheepan. He also penned last year’s massive box office succes, La Famille Bélier.

Previously announced titles include Philippe Garrel’s opening night entry, In The Shadow Of Women, which will be preceded by a never-before-seen short of his from 1968, Actua 1. We also knew prior to today that Arnaud Desplechin’s My Golden Years is in — many had expected to see it in Competition; and Miguel Gomes’ six-hour Arabian Nights, which will screen in three volumes over three days. The Carosse d’Or homage will go to Chinese helmer Zhangke Jia whose Mountains May Depart is in Competition. The tribute includes a screening of his 2000 Platform, followed by a masterclass given by the director.
