Disney's live-action reboot of Lady and the Tramp has bagged one of the most popular stars from the Marvel Cinematic Universe to play lovable Cocker Spaniel Lady.

The House of Mouse is preparing a live-action/CGI hybrid reinvention of the 1955 animated classic for its upcoming streaming service, which is slated to launch with some huge new shows and movies next year.

The LEGO Ninjago Movie director Charlie Bean has already cast The Leftovers' leading man Justin Theroux as wise-cracking mutt the Tramp, who knows the ins-and-outs of the big city.

It looks like he'll be passing on some tips about how to be street-smart to Thor: Ragnarok's Tessa Thompson, as she's signed up to lend her voice as Lady (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The film revolves around Lady growing close to (and sharing Spaghetti with) the Tramp after being kicked out of her posh home by her fickle owner Darling, who'll be played in live-action by Bad Neighbours 2 star Kiersey Clemons.

The cast also includes Ashley Jensen as a gender-swapped version of the Scottish terrier Jock (now Jackie), as well as Doctor Strange's Benedict Wong as the English bulldog called Bull.

Thompson is one of the most in-demand actresses in Hollywood, coming freshly off the second season of HBO's prestige drama Westworld and film festival hit Sorry to Bother You.

Next up for her are a series of franchise appearances in the Rocky spin-off Creed II, a leading role in the Men in Black reboot, and she's also been pitching a female-focused Avengers movie with Marvel.

Disney hasn't announced a firm launch date for its streaming service, or a release for the Lady and the Tramp reboot.
