Disney has cast its Lilo for the upcoming live-action Lilo & Stitch remake.

As reported by Deadline, newcomer Maia Kealoha will play the young girl who makes friends with an alien experiment and teaches him the meaning of ohana (family).

The casting is reminiscent of Moana, in which the House of Mouse cast Hawaiian newcomer Auli’i Cravalho as the titular heroine.

The only other known casting at the time is Zach Galifianakis. It's not been revealed what his role will be, although rumours suggest he is playing Pleakley.

Marcel the Shell with Shoes On's Dean Fleischer Camp is directing the film, while Chris Kekaniokalani Bright has worked the script.

Chris Sanders, who co-directed the original film, explained last year that he was slightly frustrated at all the praise that Disney's Frozen received for portraying sisterhood in an animated film, when the first Lilo & Stitch had done it around a decade earlier.

"To be clear, I think Frozen's great," he said. "But it was a little bit frustrating for me because people were like, 'Finally, a non-romantic relationship with these two girls,' and I thought, 'We did that! That has absolutely been done before.'"

Disney has many live-action remakes and adaptations in the works, at various stages of production. There's The Little Mermaid, Snow White, Hercules, The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Sword in the Stone, Robin Hood, Bambi and The Aristocats.

And then there are also sequels and/or spin-offs to the already released live-action versions of Aladdin, The Jungle Book, Cruella and The Lion King (which isn't really live-action at all, but it looks like it is).
