Disneyland Celebrates 60 Years With Three New Attractions

Disneyland is celebrating its 60th birthday with a facelift.

Three new nighttime attractions will kick off the summer beginning Friday to add sparkle to the Disneyland Resort, which includes the original Disney theme park, the Disney California Adventure Park, three hotels and the Downtown Disney District located in Anaheim, Calif.

The Paint the Night parade is the first all-LED parade at Disneyland and includes more than 1.5 million individually controlled lights in displays from Disney hits including “Monsters, Inc.,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Frozen.”

A new fireworks display titled “Disneyland Forever” will incorporate storefront projections for an immersive experience including a dance with King Louie from “The Jungle Book,” a flight over London with characters from “Peter Pan” and two original songs penned by Richard M. Sherman.

Neil Patrick Harris and Mickey Mouse co-star in the third attraction, “World of Color,” which combines film, animation, fountains, lasers, special effects and a musical score.

Disneyland park first opened its gates in 1955, over a decade before Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, opened in 1971. While many attractions have come and gone, enduring features include Main Street U.S.A. with a train station, movie theater and city hall, and Tomorrowland, which includes the indoor coaster Space Mountain and inspired the Disney film of the same name starring George Clooney and currently in release.

The summer kickoff Diamond Celebration runs 24 hours until 6 a.m. on May 23.
