Disney's Cruella lands first reactions to 101 Dalmatians prequel movie
The first reactions are in for Disney's origin story Cruella and if you didn't love the eternally stylish villain before, prepare to make a new place in your heart for Ms de Vil.
Set during the 1970s in London amid the backdrop of the punk scene, Cruella is as stylish as you'd expect, with many lauding its aesthetic and soundtrack.
Starring Emma Stone as the future Cruella and Emma Thompson as the fashion house boss who leads her down a dark path, the film has been praised for offering some much-needed escapism.
Digital Spy's Movies editor Ian Sandwell described the movie as "a lot of fun," but added that "there are questionable things with Cruella's backstory that make it hard to pair up with the villain we hate to love".
He added: "Anyone concerned about the need for an origin story for Cruella de Vil will find things to be frustrated about in #Cruella, but there's no denying it has some serious style, incredible costumes and some Very Good Dogs."
One comparison that came up in a lot of the first reactions was to 2000's classic The Devil Wears Prada.
Fandango's Erik Davis described the film as a "Disneyfied Devil Wears Prada," while Rotten Tomatoes' Joel Meares said it was "Devil Wears Prada meets The Witches meets Death Becomes Her," which sounds absolutely incredible.
Here are some of the first reactions from Twitter:
Backed by a superb soundtrack, Cruella is a lot of fun with Emma Stone excellent in the lead role and strong support from Emma Thompson. However, there are questionable things with Cruella's backstory that make it hard to pair up with the villain we hate to love. #Cruella pic.twitter.com/FxLwL9PoXA

#Cruella is a wickedly fun watch w/ amazing costumes & an epic soundtrack. Emma Stone and Emma Thompson are exceptionally evil & hilarious, and they make the movie memorable. Also, Paul Walter Hauser steals scenes, as he tends to do. It's like a Disneyfied DEVIL WEARS PRADA pic.twitter.com/dUSjlVlgsu

I generally have 0 interest in live-action remakes and/or villain origin stories but... have seen #Cruella and it’s SO FRIGGIN GOOD. Slaps so hard my face is still beet-red a day later.
If Devil Wears Prada meets The Witches meets Death Becomes Her sounds like your jam, see it. pic.twitter.com/CqPsOHAJnG— Joel Meares (@joelmeares) May 14, 2021
Cruella could be the biggest surprise of the summer. Bold, dark, & wonderfully anti-Disney. Emma Stone is perfection as Cruella. Hair & Makeup, Production Design & Costume Design are sure bets for Oscars noms. Paul Walter Hauser is terrific and Winks the dog is adorable. #Cruella pic.twitter.com/zPCdFXSGL3

Categorizing #Cruella as great isn't hyperbolic. Because it’s great.
Incredibly directed and crafted -- wouldn't shock me if it scored Best Production Design and Best Costume Oscar noms -- and well acted: everyone is having fun and that fun imprints itself on the film's DNA. pic.twitter.com/tGJLyeMWzW— Eric Italiano (@ericitaIiano) May 14, 2021
#Cruella is absolutely divine. Deliciously devilish, wonderfully wicked, undeniably outrageous. Emma Stone & Emma Thompson are truly an iconic pairing & they play it to the hilt. Costume designer Jenny Beavan deserves 3rd billing. Plus, it’s got a killer soundtrack. @cruella pic.twitter.com/N5UFEnmSr1
