Disney's star-studded Haunted Mansion remake has earned 52% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Set for release on Friday (July 28), this family-friendly ghoulfest follows single mother Gabbie (Ahsoka's Rosario Dawson) and her son Travis (newcomer Chase W Dillon), who are terrorised by spirits in their new home.

Brought in to rid them of these pesky tenants are an ex-paranormal investigator, a priest, a psychic and college history professor.

Over on the popular aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, the critics seem torn over Haunted Mansion, with many celebrating its handling of heavy themes while simultaneously questioning its runtime and genre clichés.

Below you'll find snippets from their reviews.

IGN

"As a film that handles tough conversations about a peaceful, even celebratory afterlife, Haunted Mansion does a tremendous job softening the blow of crushing mortality. Death can be a petrifying concept for any audience, let alone youngsters, but Haunted Mansion handles existential dread and immense grief with the fearlessness of a showstopper like Coco."

The Telegraph

"Unlike the earlier [Eddie] Murphy film, Haunted Mansion isn't dreadful. There are some well-rigged, gutsy scares, especially by 12A standards, and a few persuasively creepy scenes. But at more than two hours, it's grindingly overlong, and the script, with its multiple false starts and wheezing plot contortions, feels reworked almost to the point of structural collapse."

The Hollywood Reporter

"Woefully short on the necessary laughs and scares that would have made it a potential blockbuster franchise like the Pirates of the Caribbean series, Haunted Mansion only makes you ponder how much better it might have turned out had Guillermo del Toro, who was originally attached to the project, remained creatively involved."

The Guardian

"This new attempt to cross-monetise the tourist walkthrough is laborious and joyless while the throwaway funny lines, which do exist, only serve in the end to remind you how clunky it really is overall."

The Observer

"The film is not especially scary—there are a few jumpy moments—but that suits the material. Despite a few cartoon-y scenes, [director Justin] Simien and his cast elevate Haunted Mansion to a thoroughly entertaining and oddly emotional good time."

Variety

"The more this overlong movie relies on ghosts, the less engaging it becomes, and though Simien presents a few optical illusions — such as endless hallways and a stretching room modelled after the ride's trompe l'oeil antechamber — the ideas are more interesting than the execution."

Haunted Mansion opens in UK cinemas on August 11.
