Disney’s Zootropolis Smashes Box Office Record In China

Disney’s latest animated movie ‘Zootropolis’ isn’t even out in the UK for another few weeks, but it’s already taking the US by storm, having now broken a record at the Chinese box office.

Released in America on 4 March, its performance surprised many as it took a staggering $73.7 million (that’s £52 million) during its opening weekend. But its reception in China has also made headlines after it amassed $25 million in a 24-hour period, becoming the new record holder for the largest single-day gross of an animation in China.

‘Zootropolis’ broke the record on Saturday (12 March), and is quickly approaching ‘Kung Fu Panda 3′ which is the country’s biggest animated film to date, also released this year.

In fact, ‘Zootropolis’ is about to pass the $100 million mark this very weekend, so any fears that the film might’ve been overshadowed or swept under the rug (due to its post-Oscar, pre-summer release period) couldn’t be further from the truth.

No doubt it’ll be a popular hit when it reaches the UK at the end of March, having already gotten off to a better start than the Mouse House’s monster hit ‘Frozen’ did back in 2013, which opened with $67.4 million (£47.6 million).

Ginnifer Goodwin and Jason Bateman star as Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde, as the unlikely pair embark on an adventure in what can only be described as a crime-mystery to discover the recent disappearance of a number of the city’s residents.

‘Zootropolis’ is in UK cinemas from 25 March.
