Avicii: DJ's family release statement following 28-year-old star's death in Oman

Avicii's family has released a statement following the death of the producer last Friday.

The family of the 28-year-old producer - born Tim Bergling - has spoken out three days after his sudden death in Muscat, Oman.

In the statement to press, the family shows their appreciation for Avicii's fans and the artist tributes that took place throughout the weekend.

"We would like to thank you for the support and the loving words about our son and brother," the statement reads. "We are so grateful for everyone who loved Tim’s music and have precious memories of his songs. Thank you for all the initiatives taken to honour Tim, with public gatherings, church bells ringing out his music, tributes at Coachella and moments of silence around the world."

The statement adds that they "are grateful for the privacy during this difficult time" and that they wish "it continues that way."

On Friday, the late DJ's publicist Diana Baron issued a statement confirming his death, asking for privacy and saying "no further statements would be given."

Avicii was a pioneer for the EDM genre and collaborated with artists including Madonna, Robyn, Major Lazer, Daft Punk and Coldplay.

In 2016, he retired from live performances after suffering multiple health issues including acute pancreatitis due to drinking alcohol.

Just two years before, he had his gallbladder and appendix removed, and he cancelled tour dates in order to recover.

Avicii released what would be his final EP last fall Avicii (01).

While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, SkyNews reported that there was no foul play involved in Avicii's death.
