Doc Martin fans fear it may be over for good after series nine cliffhanger ending
Doc Martin's ninth series came to an end tonight (November 13), but some fans fear the show may never return – especially after the episode's cliffhanger ending.
In the episode, Doc Martin (played by Martin Clunes) was going through the final part of his General Medical Council scrutiny.
Surgeon Bernard Newton, played by legendary British actor Tom Conti (Emily's dad in Friends), had arrived in Portwenn to asses Martin, but things didn't go as he had hoped.
After Newton told him he had failed every test, Martin decided he was sick of jumping through hoops and resigned knowing he'd soon be struck off.
But before he could tell Louisa what happened, his wife had some bigger news for him – she's pregnant.
After hearing that he was going to be a father again, Martin told Louisa he was no longer a doctor and admitted that his timing couldn't have been worse.
And with that, the episode ended, leaving many wondering if we'd ever visit Portween again, especially as Martin is no longer a doctor.
It has previously been reported that ITV had commissioned Doc Martin for nine series, although Clunes told Digital Spy in 2017 that doesn't necessarily mean there won't be any more.
"That was the last one [series 9] we had commissioned," the actor explained at the time. "We don't just decide to make it on our own, ITV have to commission it.
"And ITV has commissioned the ninth. We don't have a commission beyond that. Ask me again in two years."
While ITV hasn't directly said it's all over, it did teasingly tweet 'Goodbye, Doc! We'll miss you' after tonight's episode.

I really hope that isn't the last ever episode of #DocMartin . I'll miss the light escapism an hour of it a week brings to an often very dreary real world.

It is quite heartbreaking whether we get another series or not. If we don’t I just want to say thank you #DocMartin and all the cast and crew for bringing us this brilliant, charming, funny, compelling and long lasting drama. A powerful TV moment tonight.
