Note: This article contains major spoilers for episode three of Doctor Who season 12.

Titled 'Orphan 55', tonight's episode of Doctor Who saw Jodie Whittaker's Time Lord and her companions take a trip to Tranquility spar, a seemingly peaceful and relaxing resort that naturally turned out to be anything but.

Our heroes soon learnt that the spar is actually located on planet Earth – but not as we know it.

In this "possible future", humanity has been destroyed by the devastating impact of climate change and horrific creatures known as Dregs – which breathe in carbon dioxide and exhale oxygen – now roam the planet.

Like a cross between a xenomorph from Alien and a Predator, these powerful and toothy new monsters certainly gave viewers the willies, with many labelling them the scariest the series has produced in a while.

One viewer tweeted: "Ok so the story felt a little messy in places, but what I can give the episode credit for is the Dregs have got to be one of the scariest monsters we've had in a while."

While another wrote: "I really like the change in tone in this episode and I thought the monsters did look scary."

Doctor Who airs on BBC One in the UK and BBC America in the US.
