Dodgeball 2 is in early development, it has been confirmed, and is also welcoming back one of its original stars.

Vince Vaughn will return to star and may also take on additional producing duties when it comes to the sequel to the 2004 comedy, Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, while Jordan VanDina will be scripting the sequel, Deadline reports.

Rawson Marshall Thurber wrote and directed Dodgeball. However, it has not yet been announced whether Thurber will be involved in Dodgeball 2, nor has it been confirmed who will helm the project.

It is also unknown at the moment if any of Vaughn’s original co-stars will join him for this sequel. In the original movie, he shared the big screen with Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Alan Tudyk, Joel David Moore, Chris Williams, Missi Pyle, Gary Cole, Jason Bateman and William Shatner, and the late Rip Torn.

There have been talks for a sequel to take place for a while now, and last year Long spoke to ComicBook.com, revealing that he had discussed a sequel with Stiller, whilst also promoting some of his recent projects.

"Of course, I would love to do it and I hope that it ends up happening, but I think Ben is a little... what he told me on that podcast was that he's a little trepidatious about doing a sequel to something so beloved, something that people enjoy so much that," he explained.

"It's very risky, you don't wanna shit on the original, you want something just as good. So I think he's a little wary of that, of trying to recreate something that was very specific to that time, but I hope he comes around on it.”

However, Long did admit that if anyone could convince Stiller to rejoin the cast, it would be Vaughn.

"Vince is a very convincing person, so I'm just hoping Vince can convince him with his idea," he added. "It's a funny idea, I don't wanna say what it is."
