Dolph Lundgren Wants To Play Cable In Deadpool 2

Look out, Ryan Reynolds - there’s a bona fide action legend gunning for a major role in the ‘Deadpool’ sequel.

Yes, none other than Dolph Lundgren has expressed interest in taking on the role of Cable, the one new character we know is intended to appear in the follow-up (because Deadpool himself told us after the credits).

That said, when discussing the matter with Nerdist, Lundgren made no bones about not being too well-versed in the contemporary superhero genre, and in fact couldn’t recall Deadpool’s name offhand, knowing him only as a character with a “funny mask.”

But then Lundgren added, “Isn’t there a character named Cable that’s coming? Like, he’s a big guy?… Well, I guess I could kick some butt doing that, I suppose. We’ll see.”

The matter came up as Lundgren is no stranger to Marvel Comics, having taken the lead in the original 1989 version of ‘The Punisher’ - which was, in fact, only the second theatrically released feature film based on a Marvel character, after the notorious ‘Howard the Duck.’

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld also co-created Cable, and the two characters have long been closely related in the comics. To date, Stephen Lang (’Avatar’) has long been cited as the most likely candidate for the role.

But could Dolph Lundgren be a possibility? As the man himself says, we’ll see.

‘Deadpool’ was unexpectedly huge hit with critics and audiences alike earlier this year, amassing $762 million at the global box office (the highest haul ever for an R-rated film).

Lundgren, meanwhile, will next be seen in direct-to-DVD action comedy sequel ‘Kindergarten Cop 2′ (yes, really).
