The series is set in World War II when Fleming was a naval intelligence officer, helping plan military strategy against the Nazis.

Fleming famously used his war time experience to create the background to the Bond novels, reportedly basing 007 on a number of the real-life secret agents he met.

Dominic said: “stepping into the shoes of the spy who not only created the enigmatic character of 007, but who fantasized about being him, has to be every actor’s dream.”

Producer Douglas Rae said: “Ian Fleming’s story is as dramatic and entertaining as nay of the Bond films.”

The series will air later this year.

The James Bond franchise has recently enjoyed a surge in popularity after ‘Skyfall’, starring Daniel Craig, became the most successful British film of all time – rounding off an incredible 50th anniversary year for the film series

Now the longest running movie franchise in history, Bond will be recognised at this year’s Oscars Ceremony where all six actors to have played the spy will gather on stage for the first time.

Fleming died in August 1964, shortly before the release of definitive Bond classic, ‘Goldfinger’.
