Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump stayed out of public view on Thanksgiving, taking to social media to offer Thanksgiving wishes as the president continued to complain about the recent election.

According to a spokesperson for the first lady, the couple will eat Thanksgiving dinner with immediate family at the White House, after changing their usual plans to visit their Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.

"The First Family will be celebrating the day with immediate family for dinner at the White House," said the first lady's spokesperson, in a statement to PEOPLE Thursday. "The President and First Lady wish everyone across the country a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving."

As is tradition, the White House released its customary Thanksgiving Proclamation on Thursday.

President Trump, 74, offered a brief message of thanks on his personal Twitter account, writing "HAPPY THANKSGIVING!" above a re-tweet of news that the Supreme Court had ruled against a recent restriction by New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

In its decision late Wednesday, the court overturned limits Cuomo had placed on attendance at religious services due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Cuomo has downplayed the significance of the ruling.

Trump also used the holiday to continue posting disputed claims about the recent presidential election, which he lost to Democrat Joe Biden by both electoral and popular votes. According to the latest vote totals tallied by the Associated Press, Biden received more than 80 million votes to Trump's roughly 74 million.

"Just saw the vote tabulations. There is NO WAY Biden got 80,000,000 votes!!! This was a 100% RIGGED ELECTION," the president wrote, despite offering no proof to back up his allegation.

The tweet came with a label from Twitter that it contained disputed claims about the election.

On her own official government account, the first lady, 50, expressed gratitude for service members, first responders and members of law enforcement.

"On #Thanksgiving, we are reminded of the love of family & friends as we reflect upon the many blessings we have received," Mrs. Trump wrote. "We are thankful for our service members, first responders & law enforcement for all they do to defend & serve this great Nation. #HappyThanksgiving"

On Tuesday, Trump pardoned his final turkey during a ceremony at the White House Rose Garden.

Also this week, Mrs. Trump welcomed the holiday season by greeting the White House Christmas tree, an 18-foot Fraser fir delivered via a pair of Clydesdale horses.

Mrs. Trump will soon unveil her holiday decorations, one of her final duties as first lady before she and her husband leave office on Jan. 20.

The first lady's spokeswoman previously told PEOPLE she was "looking forward to once again opening the People’s House for Christmas."

The White House has worked to defend itself in recent weeks regarding indoor holiday events that will move forward despite the ongoing novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Invitations for a holiday reception scheduled for Nov. 30 have already been sent out by the first lady's office, though her spokeswoman has told reporters that the guest lists are smaller than in years past and that "masks will be required and available."
