It’s finally official: Donald Trump is the 45th President of the United States. This is something that a great many in the US and all over the world have been distinctly uneasy about for some time, and now, in his inauguration speech, one particular line uttered by the President has made some even more uneasy.

Yes, President Trump seems to have quoted dialogue – or at least expressed a similar sentiment, in very similar words – from Bane, the Batman villain portrayed by Tom Hardy in 2012’s ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’

This tweet from Deadspin editor Timothy Burke demonstrates the parallel:

Both Trump and Bane speak of “giving [power] back to you, the people.”

Bane, as those who have seen ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ should recall, seizes control of Gotham City by force and holds it under siege with a nuclear threat, while the streets descend into violent disorder.

We’ll leave it to the reader to cast your own aspersions on any possible real-life parallels.
