Yahoo Movies Dune 2 hits huge box office milestone
Dune: Part Two is about to set another box office milestone, after an already successful debut.
The sequel to the 2021 film Dune, which stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, is based on the second half of the novel Dune by Frank Herbert. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, the sequel has grossed $494.7 million globally, including $208 million in North America and $289.4 million internationally.
According to Variety, it is now set to surpass $500 million by Monday, an especially impressive feat as most post-pandemic films have struggled to reach this figure.

Dune: Part Two is currently the highest-grossing film of 2024 at the domestic and worldwide box office so far. While it surpassed its predecessor's domestic tally after just ten days ($108 million), it's worth noting that the first film was released both in cinemas and on HBO Max simultaneously. This consequently stifled ticket sales, as viewers opted to stream the film – an option not afforded to them with the release of Part Two.
Despite its hefty expenses ($190 million to produce and roughly $100 million to promote), Dune: Part Two has performed exceptionally well across the globe. Ticket sales in China ($36 million), the UK ($32.8 million), Germany ($25 million) France ($24.9 million) and Australia ($15.6 million) have all held strong against the competition.

Fans are eager for news of a third film, which could be based on Herbert's second novel Dune: Messiah, though this hasn't been confirmed yet.
Speaking to Digital Spy, Villeneuve teased: "We are in early stages. We are in the right direction. There's a lot of work that has been done, but there's a lot of work that needs to be done in order to have something solid to shoot."
Dune: Part Two is out now in cinemas.
