Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham are fast, furious and funny in first 'Hobbs & Shaw' trailer

Even the tightest-knit families have to chart their own paths sometimes. That’s why Luke Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson) and Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) are leaving the warm embrace of Dom Toretto’s street-racing, heist-organizing, Corona-quaffing familia and striking out on their own. (Well, that and the fact that Johnson and Vin Diesel have famously had some sibling squabbles.) The unlikely cop-criminal duo buddy up in Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, which races into theaters in August. The first trailer for the David Leitch-directed film dropped this morning, showcasing the franchise’s usual mixture of fast cars and furious action, as well as the addition of a next-gen opponent in the form of Idris Elba. (Watch the trailer above.)

The last time we saw these guys, in The Fate of the Furious, they were alternately racing after a submarine (Hobbs) and leaping out of an airplane with a baby (Shaw). Flash forward two years, and both men are leading relatively sedate lives in California and London, respectively. But they’re called back into service by the arrival of a literal supervillain, Brixton (Elba), who quickly demonstrates what a real-life Man of Steel looks like. In an early scene, he decimates an MI6 team led by Hattie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby), yet another member of the Shaw crime family, which includes Deckard, Owen (Luke Evans) and mama Magdalene (Helen Mirren).

To take Brixton down, the powers that be decide they need not just one, but two men with a very particular set of skills. Hobbs is recruited because he “always gets his guy,” while Shaw is an expert at “operating outside the system.” And yes, it’s well known that these two don’t exactly play well together — maybe because Deckard straight-up murdered one of the franchise’s most beloved characters? (We still haven’t forgotten!) That arguably only makes them more lethal to Brixton … and maybe each other.

The rest of the trailer showcases the hyper-exaggerated heroics fans have come to expect from the Fast & the Furious franchise, as well as Leitch’s filmography, which includes John Wick, Atomic Blonde and Deadpool 2. Cars soar through the air, Statham and Johnson throw kicks and punches and Elba Hulks out courtesy of his Iron Man-like super-suit. It’s all in a day’s work when you’re saving the world for the first or, in Hobbs’s case, fourth time.

Even after nine movies, it’s clear that fans aren’t tired of the ridiculous excess of this series. Here’s the reaction on Twitter so far.

Personally, we can’t wait for the next spinoff: Fast & Furious Presents: Letty & Cipher.

Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw opens theatrically on Aug. 2.
