According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dwayne Johnson’s villainous character from the upcoming ‘Shazam!’ movie will be getting his own spin-off.

“New Line and DC Entertainment are doubling down on comic book hero Shazam!” they revealed. “New Line, which has been for over a decade developing a movie on the long-time DC character, will develop concurrently a movie centering on Black Adam, with Dwayne Johnson attached to star as Shazam’s arch-nemesis.”

That’s right – we could be getting two ‘Shazam!’ based movies.

“The move stems from last week’s high level meeting with Johnson and DC Films co-head and comics author Geoff Johns, after which Johnson took to social media to promise ‘hope, optimism & fun’.”

But what does this mean for ‘Shazam!’?

Apparently, Dwayne Johnson has been attached to the role of Black Adam since 2008… but since then, his star power has skyrocketed. Now, it makes little sense for Johnson to take the role of a villain or supporting character. And that’s why DC now wants to see him headlining his own spin-off.

Black Adam’s appearance in ‘Shazam!’ reportedly sees him as more of an anti-hero… and that makes his own spin-off movie make a lot more sense.

“It also mirrors recent developments in the DC comics, in stories written by Johns, where Adam, while still a villain, was fighting against enemies who sought to enslave his people.”

Will this be the subject of the ‘Black Adam’ movie?

At the moment, that remains a bit of a mystery.

But the thought of Dwayne Johnson starring in his very own Black Adam filme is absolutely perfect… even if there’s a chance it might not see the light of day. After all, Warner Bros. has a track record for having several scripts at various stages for the same project, and then cherry-picking which one gets made.

In essence, it could well be that this ‘Black Adam’ movie ends up being ‘Shazam!’.

But for now, we have to wait and see.
