Eamonn Holmes has slammed Gogglebox bosses as “idiotic and cruel” after he faced a backlash from viewers for the way he responded to a scene.

The This Morning presenter was taking part of the celebrity edition of the show alongside wife Ruth Langsford when some viewers took umbrage with his apparent response to a poignant scene.

The scene in question, from BBC documentary Ambulance, saw a young boy save his father’s life after he suffered a heart attack.

The channel 4 show then depicted Holmes recalling ferrying Langsford to the hospital when she went into labour.

Some fans considered the tale at odds with the nature of the initial clip, with many taking to social media to share their thoughts.

One viewer tweeted: "A 10 year old has just resuscitated his dad back to life after having a heart attack and Eamonn Holmes is likening the heroism to him getting Ruth to hospital when she was in labour?!”

Another said: "Eamonn Holmes always has to make everything about himself?”

Someone else added: "Only Eamonn Holmes can turn a child saving his own father into a story about how great he is for driving his wife to hospital.”

In response to the criticism, Holmes tweeted to explain how the editing was such that his actual was response was emitted.

He said: "In reply to a number of complaints .... I am hurt beyond belief that @C4Gogglebox chose not to use me talking about my Father dying from a heart attack at the side of a road and replace it with a funny story following a young lad giving his Father CPR. Idiotic and cruel edit.

"So following a tragedy that has forever haunted my family, I am in no mood for criticising holier than thou mouthpieces on here who haven't gone through what we did.

"I had nothing but praise and emotion for the Ambulance control room TV programme. An atrocious edit @StudioLambert."

Gogglebox is available to stream on More4 now.
