Edgar Wright teases animated 'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' project

Edgar Wright says that plans are afoot for an animated follow-up to his cult comic-book adaptation Scott Pilgrim Vs The World.

The Shaun Of The Dead and Hot Fuzz director made this admission during an in-depth oral history for Entertainment Weekly, revealing that, even though the film was considered a box office flop upon its release in 2010, he has been talking with Pilgrim’s creator and cartoonist Bryan Lee O’Malley and producer Jared LeBoff about a return.

“There’s some plans — and there’s nothing official yet — but there are some plans to revisit the material in an animation way. We’ve been talking with Bryan and with Jared for a while [about]: What if we did something with the books in anime form? It’s being discussed as we speak.”

There was huge anticipation surrounding the release of Scott Pilgrim Vs The World ahead of its release in the summer of 2010, especially after it received a euphoric response at that year’s comic-con.

However, after costing £68.8 million ($85 million) to make, it only went on to gross just £39 million ($48.1 million) at the box office. It quickly became a cult commodity, though, thanks to its impressive reviews, which earned it a score of 82% on Rotten Tomatoes.

But Michael Cera, who played the titular character, doesn’t believe that will be enough for a sequel to hit cinemas. He told Entertainment Weekly, “I don’t think a sequel is a reality.”

“In my limited understanding of the film industry, when a movie doesn’t really explode at the box office, it’s hard for anybody to get behind a sequel.”

However, O’Malley admitted that has begun preliminary work on a follow-up comic, explaining, “I would like to revisit the characters [in comic form] and see what they’re up to. I sketched Scott early in the pandemic with a huge beard. I think that would be a funny image.”
