In a curve ball from the Spider-verse, Sony is said to be plotting a new movie project around the character of Madame Web.

Collider reports that Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who penned the forthcoming Morbius movie, are to work on the script.

It what feels like an unusual choice of character to base a new Spider-verse movie around, Madame Webb, aka Cassandra Webb, is – in the comic books at least – depicted as an elderly clairvoyant, a pre-cognative mutant who is connected to a life support system resembling a large spider's web.

She first appeared in the Marvel comics in 1980, helping Peter Parker with a kidnapping case.

However, in later storylines, Cassandra Web passed her powers on to Julia Carpenter, aka Spider-Woman, who became the second Madame Web, so it could be that this character may be the focus of the movie.

In the Spider-Man animated series, Madame Web was actually voiced by Joan Lee, the wife of the late Marvel co-founder Stan Lee.

It signals another project in the Spider-Man series for Sony, following news of a second Venom movie, to be helmed by Andy Serkis and finding Tom Hardy reprising his role as the reporter who becomes fused with an alien symbiote.

But Morbius will be next up, with Jared Leto playing the anti-hero scientist who becomes 'a living vampire' due to a biochemical experiment gone tragically wrong.

Leto is joined on the bill by Adria Arjona, Matt Smith, Jared Harris and Tyrese Gibson.

Having completed filming this summer, it's due for release in July, 2020.
