What Boris Johnson's remarkable election victory means for Brexit

Boris Johnson has secured a majority in Parliament and will be able to pass his Brexit deal.

His agreement with the EU should now pass through the House of Commons with Tories having stood on a platform of getting his withdrawal bill approved.

What is the timeframe for leaving the EU?

The vote was called after Parliament initially approved his deal to proceed to its next stage - but blocked the timeframe he wanted to pass the bill.

The EU has agreed to postpone the UK’s departure until January 31 2020 but if a deal is passed before then it can leave earlier.

When will Parliament vote on the deal again?

Home Secretary Priti Patel did not confirm when the bill would come back for a vote but told the BBC a Tory majority government would “not hang around” and they “want to move things forward”.

Parliament is due to sit again on December 17.

“Get Brexit done”

The Conservatives campaigned under the slogan of “Get Brexit Done - Unleash Britain’s Potential”.

The line was criticised by opponents who said that Brexit will not be completed by January 2020 - instead, trade talks with the EU could take years to complete.
