Elizabeth Olsen has revealed that she auditioned for the role of Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, and it went horribly.

The Avengers star went into the gory details on US talk show Live With Kelly and Ryan, saying it was now part of her 'selective memory'.

“Someone had asked about a terrible audition story, a journalist, not a good time to remember something like that,” Olsen said.

“I was like ‘I actually really love auditioning, so I can’t really think of anything', and [then] I was like, 'Oh that’s right, I auditioned for Game of Thrones'.

“It was for Khaleesi – she was just burned alive and then I start making this huge speech. I was in the smallest room with the casting director, they didn’t even have a reader, and that was the furthest I ever got. It was that bad. It was horrible.

“I was like, ‘This is uncomfortable for me, I’m sure it’s awkward for her (casting director), no one’s going to enjoy this experience’.”

She added that in hindsight, she should have stopped the audition in its tracks and asked to come back another time.

“I should have (stopped it). I think I would now. I’d be, ‘I don’t think I’m going to do this any justice… hopefully call me back at a different time… for something else’.”

She wasn't the only one not to get the part.

British actress Tamzin Merchant played Daenerys in the un-aired pilot of the show's first episode, nearly all of which was eventually re-shot by showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff.

Emilia Clarke then replaced Merchant in the role in 2010, though strangely, Clarke's own audition for the role of the Mother of Dragons was pretty unorthodox.

She told Jimmy Fallon that Benioff suggested she 'do a dance' in the audition, so she pulled out the Funky Chicken, moving in The Robot.

“I heard laughter going on and I thought, ‘Comedy gold!’” she said.

The robot was notably missing from the final performance.
