Emily Blunt Reveals Emotional Julie Andrews Response To Mary Poppins Casting

When it was finally announced that Emily Blunt would be following in the hallowed footsteps of Julie Andrews by portraying Mary Poppins in ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ moviegoers around the world immediately nodded their heads in approval at the choice.

While obviously confident in her ability, Emily Blunt has now admitted to Entertainment Weekly that she was a little wary of taking on the role because she’s “so emblematic of people’s nostalgia. It’s such an important character in people’s childhood.”

But Blunt’s nerves were immediately quashed when she learnt that Julie Andrews had given her seal of approval to her casting. While Julie Andrews didn’t make these remarks to Emily Blunt’s face, they were relayed to the ‘Sicario’ actress by ‘Mary Poppins Returns’’ director Rob Marshall.

“Rob said he was in the Hamptons, and he saw [Andrews], and he said, ‘It’s top secret, but Emily Blunt’s playing Mary Poppins.’ And she went, ‘Oh, wonderful!’”

As you can imagine this made Emily Blunt immediately emotional and gush with pride, while it was also all the encouragement she needed to truly dive head first into the role.

“I felt like I wanted to cry,” Blunt explained. “It was lovely to get her stamp of approval. That took the edge off it, for sure.”

Set 20 years after the original film, ‘Mary Poppins Returns’ is based on P.L. Travers’ seven novels that followed her original book. As well as Blunt, it will also start ‘Hamilton’ hot-shot Lin-Manuel Miranda and, allegedly Meryl Streep, while it will be released in the US on December 25, 2018.
