Awards season might be lacking some of the real-life red carpet magic this year, but that hasn’t stopped Hollywood’s heavyweights from bringing their sartorial A-game, even when tuning in from home.
And yet among the sea of sitting room ball gowns shots and pool-side power suits, one actress has emerged as a strong contender for the most fashion-forward dresser in tinseltown.
Emma Corrin appeared (virtually) at the 26th Critics Choice Awards last night wearing a totally outlandish Schiaparelli black mini dress that featured giant golden pearl-encrusted molars arranged around an exposed hole in the breastplate.
The velvet jersey dress, which was from the brand’s Haute Couture Spring-Summer 2021 collection, has delighted fashion enthusiasts the world over for its bold design and quintessentially Schiaparelli kookiness. Your typically genteel awards season princess dress this was not.
The British star, who won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her portrayal of princess Diana in Netflix’s The Crown, accessorised the look with a pair of matching molar earrings, black Wolford tights and Jimmy Choo pumps.
Last night’s look, which marked the first time Corrin has worn couture, followed on from the equally theatrical look the actress wore for the virtual Golden Globe Awards last weekend. Tuning in from her flat in North London, Corrin wore a custom ruff-collared Miu Miu gown, which she accompanied with tear-drop eye makeup inspired by a Pierrot clown.
Both looks were created in partnership with stylist Harry Lambert, who is also the image-maker behind Harry Styles’ fabulously exuberant and expressive wardrobe choices.
In a world where events and awards ceremonies must be experienced on screen, more stars should take a leaf from Corrin’s book, and use their front room red carpet fashion moments to deliver escapism, drama and delight. Because we could all do with a little more of that right now.
