Eva Green: 300 character Artemisia is "ruthless"

Actress admits to going darker with new role.

Eva Green reckons that her 300: Rise of an Empire character is the most ruthless she has ever played.

The actress stars in Noam Murro's upcoming sequel as Artemisia I of Caria, a warrior queen and ally of Persia's 'God king' Xerxes. According to Ancient Greek lore, Artemisia was the only female commander of the Persian navy.

Speaking to Total Film the actress said: “She’s the most ruthless character I’ve ever played. I always say, ‘I can’t go darker,’ but I always do.

“She’s like a man. That’s what I like about it. I don’t like ‘girlfriend rules’ and all that shit.”



The film, based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes, is set concurrently with Zack Snyder's 2007 movie which depicted the battle of Thermopylae, and sees an epic war take place on water between Artemisia and Themistocles' forces.

Sullivan Stapleton plays the Athenian politician and soldier, while Lena Headey, Rodrigo Santoro and David Wenham reprise their roles from the first film.

300: Rise of an Empire hits cinemas on 7 March, 2014.
