Deathstroke movie: Everything you need to know

Deathstroke is Slade Wilson, DC Comics' foremost assassin (and occasional anti-hero) – a sort of anti-Batman who's called in whenever the bad guys really want someone dead.

And if he sounds familiar, that's because Deadpool (aka Wade Wilson) was originally created as a shameless knock-off of Deathstroke before developing his own, irreverent personality.

But enough about Marvel – Deathstroke remains DC's grim, one-eyed killing machine.

In October 2017, DC and Warner Bros were announced to be working on a solo Deathstroke movie. It joins a stuffed 'in development' list that includes Batgirl, Nightwing, Justice League Dark, Cyborg, a Harley Quinn solo movie, a Harley Quinn and Joker team-up movie, a non-DCEU Joker movie and many more.

As most of these are without release dates, it's impossible to say when the Deathstroke movie will be coming without further announcements from Warner – but director Gareth Evans is apparently booked solid until 2020, so we might have a long wait.

As far back as 2015, it was rumoured that Magic Mike actor Joe Manganiello would be playing Slade Wilson/Deathstroke in Suicide Squad.

That didn't quite happen, but we soon learned that the True Blood actor was attached to the role in the Ben Affleck solo film The Batman (if it ever happens).

But late 2017 had more surprises for us. In October, Manganiello was announced to be getting his own solo film, and then in November he made an unexpected appearance in Justice League's post-credits scene.

The Raid director Gareth Evans has signed on to direct, and while no other cast members have been announced, we wonder if Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor could show up after his Justice League meeting with Deathstroke.

Naturally, at this early stage Warner Bros hasn't been putting a detailed synopsis about, so we're left to guessing.

As an assassin, Deathstroke is usually brought in to kill someone. Despite the fact that he's supposed to 'the best', things rarely go the way they are supposed to, and double-crossing is almost a given.

He has served as a Batman villain but is best known for his antagonism with the Teen Titans – the group formed by the sidekicks of older heroes and Justice League members.

Deathstroke and family troubles also go hand in hand. He has a bevy of children, most of whom go off the rails, intermittently dying and coming back to life in grand comic book fashion.

Deathstroke mask and costume: Movie vs TV

We've already seen Deathstroke on TV in Arrow (and in Smallville if you count that too, which most people don't), and so Manganiello's outfit has inevitably been drawn into the show vs film costume debate.

Does Arrow's Manu Bennett and his stripped-down, hockey-mask-inspired costume wipe the floor with Manganiello's more complex get-up? The jury's still in session.
