Ex-Dr Who Matt Smith To Star In Terminator Film

Former Time Lord Matt Smith has signed up to star alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger in the latest Terminator film.

The 31-year-old actor, who ended his time as Doctor Who in the BBC1 science fiction show last year, will also appear alongside Game Of Thrones star Emilia Clarke.

He will play a "new character with a strong connection to John Connor" in the new film titled Terminator: Genesis, Paramount Pictures said.

Former California governor Schwarzenegger, 66, played the title role in the original 1984 Terminator, which was directed by James Cameron.

Smith took over the role of Doctor Who from David Tennant in 2010 and appeared in his final episode on Christmas Day as millions of viewers watched him hand over the role to Peter Capaldi.

He said at the time it was the right moment to leave the show.

"It feels very emotional to be doing my final episode. My mother is mortified, honestly, she was at the front of campaigning for me to stay," he said.

"And she wasn't happy when I said I was going to leave. But when you gotta go, you gotta go."

Terminator: Genesis will be the fifth film in the series and is due to be released next year.
