Home & Away's Samara Weaving will play a real-life opera icon in upcoming movie Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Directed by Stephen Williams (Lost), this period drama orbits Joseph Bologne – also known as the 'Chevalier de Saint-Georges' and the 'Black Mozart' – in his ascension to the higher echelons of Marie Antoinette's Paris society (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Mudbound star Kelvin Harrison Jr is onboard to play Joseph himself, who was the illegitimate son of a plantation owner and a slave; educated in France before becoming a fencing master.

His popular music and operas allowed him to move up the societal ranks until a court scandal destroyed everything.

Weaving, meanwhile, steps into the shoes of Marie-Josephine. She's a woman who "yearns for creative fulfilment outside of her empty, loveless marriage and defies her controlling husband to become the voice of Bologne's opera."

Chevalier de Saint-Georges was written by Stefani Robinson (What We Do in the Shadows).
