Marguerite de Carrouges actress Jodie Comer and director Ridley Scott have jointly addressed The Last Duel's ending.

In the filmmaking icon's latest medieval trip, Adam Driver's rapist character Jacques Le Gris is fatally wounded by Matt Damon's knight Jean de Carrouges, before the action wraps up with Comer's character playing with her young son and seemingly at peace.

Speaking about the ending, Comer recently told Digital Spy: "It's such a moment when she comes away from that duel and she's on horseback and I remember, really, when we would do in that scene and the kind of dialogue that we were having. She realises that this — all this excuse for a battle was never actually about her.

"It was never about being concerned for her and her welfare and getting her justice, it was about these two guys, you know, fighting it out for themselves. And then you see her, you know, with her child and she's content and to see her in that moment after, I thought was really really beautiful."

Questioned whether it was always his intention to structure the conclusion this way, Alien director Ridley Scott went on to explain: "Well, when we wrote it, everyone had forgotten about... After that would be a kid. And they went: 'Oh, right.'

"I said: 'What about the child and whose child is it?' The point is she has the child that she loves. That is the whole point of that moment. And she would never question whose child it might be.

"Of course we could end on Jodie going out at the end [where] they're walking towards [and] behind Matt, as it were [Jodie] already not being paid attention to, and yet — we see where she's coming from.

"I always felt it needed that postscript on the end to say it's the child," he added.
