Exclusive: Neighbours' Chloe and Nicolette twist was planned for 18 months

Neighbours spoilers for UK viewers follow.

Neighbours star April Rose Pengilly has revealed a major detail about Chloe Brennan and Nicolette Stone's romance.

Chloe (April Rose Pengilly) and Nicolette (Charlotte Chimes) are finally making things official – the couple plan to keep their new romance to themselves for a little while but it doesn't work out as they'd hoped.

Their relationship is exposed when Aaron Brennan (Matt Wilson), David Tanaka (Takaya Honda) and Jane Harris (Annie Jones) catch the couple kissing in the cafe.

Speaking exclusively to Digital Spy, April explained the positive direction that Chloe's new relationship will take her.

April said: "I knew way before Nicolette was even cast that a new girl would be coming in as Chloe's love interest, so I've known this was going to happen for about a year-and-a-half!

"We were grateful that it occurred as COVID rules were beginning to relax, so we were able to give the fans an actual kiss, rather than a fake COVID-safe version!"

April explained that Chloe isn't concerned about trusting Nicolette following her past behaviour. She added that Chloe is aware of Nicolette's regret and knows that she is trying to make amends. April also said that Chloe has a past of her own and that she isn't one to judge.

"Chloe feels more free and like herself in this relationship than she did being married to Pierce, who was perhaps a little too straight-laced and traditional for free-spirited Chloe," April said about the positive impact being in this relationship will have on Chloe.

"I think she feels like she can be more open and have more fun with Nicolette."

April also discussed Chloe's previous relationship with Elly and the impact it had on viewers: "Chelly (the fan name for the couple) showed us all how underrepresented female same-sex relationships are, with so many fans tuning in to Neighbours for the first time, simply because of that relationship.

"I think visibility is so important and I'm grateful that I get to be part of that!"

Neighbours airs weekdays at 1.45pm and 5.30pm on Channel 5.
